Masking Indian
[ mas · king in · dee · un ]  —  noun  ·  New Orleans
A member of a Black Mardi Gras Indian tribe. Not a costume. Not a performance. A year of labor. A lineage of resistance. Black New Orleanians who were excluded from Mardi Gras organized their own processions, borrowing from the Indigenous peoples who sheltered escaped enslaved people. The suit takes 12 months to build. Each bead is placed by hand. The chants are oral history. The streets are the stage. The culture is the archive.

"We started this because we weren't allowed to go to Mardi Gras." — Flagboy Giz
